Worried that the assembled dormer framing would be too heavy and cumbersome to try to safely raise up to the roof, I simply added a few extra 2x4 joists between the sleeping loft joists and the storage loft joists and threw down a few sheets of plywood to make an area where I could work. I then assembled the dormer framing on the roof, and raising it into place took no effort at all.
