On the plane from Miami to Guatemala an older woman was seated next to me. At some point during the flight, while I had headphones on and was watching the in-flight movie, she leans over and just starts talking. I took off my headphones and we started to chat a bit in Spanish. She said she specialized in Mayan artifacts and invited me to her home where she said she had more than 3000 items, a veritable museum, according to her. She made me write down (in my book!) her phone numbers and 4 major Mayan ruin sites in Guatemala worth seeing. (I blotted out most of her numbers for privacy). Her first name I wrote, but the last name I was having a hard time understanding because she spoke so softly, so she took the pen and shakily filled in the rest. When Renata picked me up at the airport and I was describing what happened she was amazed and informed me that Odette Arzú was quite well known in Guatemala and probably worldwide in certain circles. Apparently she is one of a number of daughters of a former president of Guatemala (??).
